ABB enters Electric Vehicle Infrastructure market in U.S. with ECOtality stakeABB enters Electric Vehicle Infrastructure market in U.S. with ECOtality stake

ABB invests $10 million and signs accord to supply technology for charging stations.

The U.S. Smart Grid continues to move closer to sustainable electric vehicle (EV) capabilities. One key component – EV charging stations – took a big step forward this month. ABB will partner with ECOtality, a San Francisco-based e-mobility and storage technologies company, to create an "EV Project" involving installation of over 15,000 chargers to support 8,300 electric vehicles. >> More Info

IEC 61850: A global concept for substation automation communicationIEC 61850: A global concept for substation automation communication

IEC 61850, an international standard that defines communication in and between electrical substation automation systems, has been embraced for its superior interoperability, cost efficiencies and other benefits around the world, except in the U.S. But that's starting to change. Learn more in this article about the superior communication and interoperability features of this global standard.

Pushing the limits: ABB product development based on IEC 61850 Pushing the limits: ABB product development based on IEC 61850

IEC 61850, as referenced in the article above, has quickly become the de-facto standard in substation automation, as evidenced by many standard-supporting intelligent electronic devices (IED's) hitting the market. However, many of these IED's sacrificed performance and flexibility as a result. ABB, from the beginning, has taken a different approach. Read more about our unique product development approach and how it is benefiting utilities.

Substations Next-Generation Substations: The impact of the Process Bus

Substations have played a crucial role in the transmission and distribution of electrical energy for over 100 years, with its primary role to transfer energy across the grid. But secondary equipment, such as protection and control, is key to substations' development in the smart-grid era. This technical article looks at the importance of one small but critical component: the process bus. >> More Info
