Invisible power lines? Certainly.
Now more than ever, we need additional transmission lines to integrate renewable energy into the grid. We've all seen the miles and miles of high voltage transmission cables and towers crossing the United States. Imagine if those cables were buried underground -- invisible to the landscape and protected from the environment.

The smart grid killer app
What is THE killer smart grid app? Is it demand response including home energy automation or electric vehicle charging? Maybe it is distribution automation to increase reliability and energy efficiency? Or is it smart grid analytics as it pertains to asset management? Learn more about what the industry says is THE smart grid killer app in the following blog post by Gary Rackliffe.

Overhead Distribution Cutouts |

PPL breaks the mold with polymer concrete cutouts
PPL, a large utility system based primarily in eastern Pennsylvania, is dedicated to serving its 1.36 million electric customers with the most reliable, stable, safe and secure distribution system possible. For years, PPL relied on distribution cutout insulators made from porcelain until they noticed the porcelain cutouts were becoming damaged by the cold-weather climate of the Northeast. After an extensive analysis and evaluation of all its distribution cutouts, PPL proactively sought an alternative plan to porcelain cutouts by using a more reliable material with added benefits.>> More Info

Flexible AC Transmission Systems |

IEEE names top 11 technologies of the decade
Coming in at number 9, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), made the cut as one of the top 11 technologies of the decade according to IEEE. These flexible AC transmission systems promise to save energy in a big way by making possible the smart grid, which utilities hope will reconfigure power flows in real time, maximizing throughput and minimizing losses. They should also make it possible to smoothly incorporate wind, solar, and other intrinsically intermittent sources of energy into the grid. As a result of this ground-breaking technology, more power can reach consumers with minimum impact on the environment, after substantially shorter project implementation times, and at lower investment costs - all compared to the alternative of building new transmission lines or power generation facilities.

Energy Trends: Challenges, developments, and the future
With hydrocarbons representing the majority of primary energy consumed, the continuity and reliability of their supply are of fundamental importance to all other parts of the economy. No wonder that the price of oil is followed, commented and analyzed like no other commodity. Besides its economic importance, there are many other reasons to be fascinated by the oil and gas industry. Take a closer look at current trends, transitions and challenges in this interview with Scott W. Tinker, state geologist of Texas and Director of the Bureau of Economic Geology.
