HVDC

HVDC: A world of knowledge

How can renewable energy from remote energy sources such as wind farms easily be connected to the grid? This challenge has engineers considering all options. Many are focused on what some regard as an "old" technology – High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable. While it was once considered a niche market, HVDC has become a major player in the integration of renewables to the grid. Discover what HVDC has to offer through a consulting engineer's journey.

Ventyx, an ABB Company

Manage aging assets more effectively by bridging operations and information technology

Despite an aging portfolio of transmission and distribution assets, utilities face unrelenting pressure on their operating and maintenance budgets. Meanwhile, expectations for electric system reliability remain undiminished, despite growing demand for power in many areas and increasing complexity of generation sources. Trying to conduct business as usual would be at best, an exercise in frustration and at worst, a recipe for disaster. If utilities look carefully at their asset management practices, however, they will find many opportunities to stretch each maintenance dollar further.

Transformers

Recovery transformer program reduces downtime

While long-term power outages are infrequent, their impact and severity are nothing to forget about. Such outages pose threats to the safety of those involved, as well as to the economy. A quick recovery is critical to reduce the economical impact and restore a safe environment; however, transformer repair or replacement could take several months and up to two years! Engineers have developed a new prototype transformer that could replace a damaged or destroyed transformer in as little as one week. Learn more about this new design and its impact on the power industry. >> Read More

FACTS

Clean power integration in Texas given a boost

Want to learn how Oncor increased transmission capacity, while ensuring grid stability and facilitating the integration of renewable power? Oncor will incorporate a flexible alternating current transmission system into their Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) program. This program aims to increase the contribution of renewable energy in Texas by up to 18 gigawatts. Completion of the transmission systems within CREZ will allow energy customers in the region to benefit from one of the world's largest wind generation installations. >> Read More
