The future is here
How do we measure up?

In August of 2007, the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) released its ‘Modern Grid Benefits’ report for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability. It’s a useful look at the seven principal characteristics that NETL identified eight years ago to launch the grid transformation.

Now that the future is here, how do we stack up? We asked Gary Rackliffe, Vice President of ABB Smart Grids in North America, to answer that question and share his views on where he thinks the power industry is headed.

Integrating renewables
For an improved 21st century grid
Decades ago, wind power slowly began to make its way into the mainstream electric power-supply system. It was assumed this source of renewable energy could easily connect to the existing grid without fundamental changes. As wind power has grown over the years, this assumption hasn’t proven exactly true, particularly in the US where an ageing grid and differing state regulations are a challenge. But change is possible and necessary if renewable energy is to reach its full potential.
