Advanced IP surveillance system secures agricultural farm

In our technology driven society, network management has become very important – so important, that it has even reached into the agricultural industry. In order to remotely monitor and manage the security of his agricultural operation, a South Dakota farm owner deployed an IP video surveillance system that connects remotely through a wireless mesh network. The network transmits images from a section of the farm nearly 4000 feet away! It even provides secure, wireless internet throughout the large property. Underground cable

Why not convert to underground cable?

For those in the power industry, the threat of a storm elicits not only a fear of power outages, but more importantly, of damaged infrastructure. The implementation of smart technologies warns of impending outages, but does not prevent them. The physical infrastructure of our power system is vulnerable. A lot of storm damage and outages could be prevented through one basic technology: underground cable. Learn more about this technology and its affect on storm preparedness.

Transformers

Distribution goes green

With the ever growing global population and an increasing global demand for energy consumption, sustaining our power-hungry world calls for energy efficient products and reliable grids. Current energy-saving programs and efficiency requirements are being driven both by global and local initiatives focused on the reduction of CO2 emissions. When it comes to distribution transformers, which are a crucial component of the electricity supply system, there is still a large total loss of energy due to their vast installed base, even in modern transformers. Learn about a new transformer design that reduces no-load losses by about 70 percent! >> Read More

Smart Grid

Smart Baghdad: Technologies heal Iraq’s power grid

Like many North American power grids, Iraq’s grid is in need of refurbishment and expansion. The unreliability of the Iraqi power grid leads to blackouts that can last for six to eight hours, making it difficult for businesses to operate. The solution to this problem relies largely on smart grid technology. By refurbishing two control centers and implementing a state-of-the-art power distribution management system, operators and automated systems are able to identify potential issues and take action before a fault can occur. Read more about how smart grid technologies are improving the Iraqi power grid. >> Read More

HVDC

HVDC technology helps power flow and reliability issues

As a result of a system unable to handle the influx of increasing amounts of wind power, high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) technology is being implemented between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan to address power flow and reliability issues. A significant amount of renewable energy is being added to the grid, causing strain on the system. The implementation of HVDC technology is designed to accommodate the addition of wind power as more projects come online. Read more to learn about how Michigan is addressing the influx of renewable energy. >> Read More
