Disruptions to utility business models

There has been much discussion over disruptive technologies for utilities, which can significantly change their operating business models. One such topic is distributed generation/roof top PV. Should utilities view this as an opportunity OR threat? What are the technological and regulatory constraints that utilities face? And what should be the best approach taken considering the penetration of renewables? >> T. A. "Ike" Kiefer, Contracts Administrator for East Mississippi Electric Power Association, answers these tough questions.

>> Discover how businesses and regulators can build a new successful utility business model by attending our live webinar on December 5 at 11 am EST.

Smart grid
The integrated grid

The electric power system is beginning to change – rapidly in some areas – with the rise of distributed energy resources (DER), such as small natural gas-fueled generators, combined heat and power plants, electricity storage, and solar photovoltaics (PV) on rooftops, and in larger arrays, connected to the distribution system. DER deployment may provide several benefits, including reduced environmental impact, deferred capacity upgrades, optimized distribution operations, demand response capabilities, and improved power system resiliency. >> Find out how to realize the full value of central and distributed energy resources in this EPRI white paper.

>> Learn to leverage smart grid technology to manage distributed energy resources in our live webinar on December 16 at 2 pm EST.

>> I’d like to talk to someone about distributed energy resources.

HVDC
New renewables require transmission upgrades

Renewable power generation is the fastest-growing segment of the industry, but the transmission to integrate this electric power is not moving anywhere close to that pace. To resolve this issue, the industry has begun changing much about the way transmission facilities are added to the grid. To make it happen on a global scale, a different regulatory environment is needed with regional and national transmission. Better use of all the technologies available would also help, such as moving from comfortable, traditional methods to more innovative approaches, like HVDC. >> Read more on these challenges and opportunities.

>> I’d like to talk to someone about HVDC.

Railway
The future of transport is electric — and it’s here

Transportation accounts for 31% of all energy use in Canada and 37% of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, according to Environment Canada. In the realm of clean energy, electrified transport is much more than just hybrid cars and state-of-the-art metro lines. It’s being used in whole new ways to make the movement of goods and people more efficient and environmentally sustainable. >> Learn how.

>> I’d like to talk to someone about railway.

Tropos wireless communication
Wireless field-area networks for smart grid communications

Shareholders, regulators, politicians, customers and consumer and environmental advocacy groups all push frequently conflicting agendas: lower rates, conservation, increased earnings and dividends, improved reliability, reduced emissions, integrated renewable generation sources, net metering, and filling the imminent labor gap. Smart grid applications can help utilities meet these conflicting demands. An additional component is required to implement a smart grid system: a two-way broadband communication network. >> Discover how this key component to smart grid implementation enables vast improvements in efficiency, security, reliability and resiliency.

>> I’d like to talk to someone about wireless communications.
