ABB's Power Update

T&D monitoring in real time

Utilities need more transmission and distribution capacity and they need it now. Unfortunately, it is just not that easy to add transmission or distribution lines to the grid. However, there is another method to cope with this challenge: the deployment of sensor and monitoring technologies across the grid. Advancements in sensor technologies allow sensors to be placed directly on transmission and distribution lines. Although these devices have been available for many years, it has only been recently that technological advancements have reduced their prices to the point they can be deployed in sufficient numbers to monitor an entire line.  >> Read more

Asset Health Center
What’s up, utility doc?

The purpose of an electric utility is to deliver electric power safely, reliably and affordably. At American Electric Power (AEP), this purpose applies to approximately 5.3 million internal customers across 11 states, as well as to interconnected municipal and co-operative electric utilities and to the three regional transmission operators in AEP’s service territory. AEP is implementing an Asset Health Center (AHC) to demonstrate AEP’s commitment and to advance their ability to fulfill that purpose—all through keeping a watchful eye on T&D substation equipment. Learn more about AHC benefits. >> Read more

Smart Grid
Accelerating change

Five years ago, Cuming County Public Power District and Stanton County Public Power District, small distribution systems in rural Nebraska, took a hard look at themselves and decided the time had come to modernize or risk falling way behind the industry. Unfortunately, the price tag for upgrading substation and communications infrastructure and related down-line components was daunting. So the duo, which serve 6,700 consumers combined, did what not-for-profit utilities do when confronted with such challenges: they joined forces. Find out what expected and unexpected benefits they were able to achieve. >> Read more
